Botswana 0 Nigeria 1: Late Ihezuo goal seals win for Super Falcons against stubborn Mares
Published: July 10, 2025
Nigeria’s Super Falcons claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Botswana's Mares at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday, thanks to a dramatic late goal that kept their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on track.
The match saw Nigeria dominate possession and create numerous chances, but they struggled to break down a disciplined Botswana defence marshalled by goalkeeper Sedilame Bosija.
In the first half, Nigeria’s Toni Payne had the clearest opportunity but saw her shot blocked by a defender, while Deborah Abiodun’s effort before the interval landed on top of the net.
Head coach Justin Madugu made key substitutions at the break, introducing Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo to inject fresh energy.
Okoronkwo had a chance early in the second half, only to be denied by Bosija. Ashleigh Plumptre also tested the Botswana keeper with a fierce strike that forced a save.
Botswana looked to threaten on the counter, with Lesego Radiakanyo and Mokgabo Thanda making determined runs, but Nigeria’s defence remained solid.
As the match approached full time, Nigeria intensified the pressure. Their persistence finally paid off in the 88th minute when they scored the decisive goal, sparking celebrations on the Nigerian bench.
The win keeps Nigeria unbeaten and top of their group with six points, moving them closer to a place in the quarter-finals.
Botswana, meanwhile, suffered a second consecutive defeat, leaving them with a difficult task to progress.
Nigeria will now aim to secure maximum points in their final group game against Algeria on Sunday, as they continue their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
