Algeria's finest: Four key players the Super Falcons must silence in Wafcon clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons, already qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), take on Algeria’s Lady Fennecs tonight at Stade Larbi Zaouli in their final Group B match.

Aiming to secure the top spot and maintain their unbeaten run, the nine-time champions must be cautious of four Algerian players who could influence this historic encounter, based on their performances and roles in the tournament.

Ghoutia Karchouni: The Inter Milan midfielder has been Algeria’s linchpin, displaying composure and creativity.

Karchouni scored the decisive goal in Algeria’s 1-0 victory over Botswana, finishing a precise cut-back from Inès Boutaleb with a composed strike.

Her ability to control the midfield and deliver key passes could challenge Nigeria’s midfield, especially with Deborah Abiodun suspended.

Karchouni’s vision and long-range shooting will test the Super Falcons’ defensive organization.

Inès Boutaleb: The attacking winger has been a constant threat with her pace and directness.

Boutaleb’s pinpoint assist for Karchouni’s goal against Botswana highlighted her ability to unlock defenses.

In recent friendlies against Nigeria in October 2024, her runs troubled the Super Falcons’ backline, despite Algeria’s 4-1 and 2-0 defeats.

Boutaleb’s flair and ability to exploit spaces could test defenders like Osinachi Ohale and Ashleigh Plumptre.

Morgane Belkhiter: The versatile defender has been a cornerstone of Algeria’s resolute backline, which remains unbeaten and yet to concede in the tournament.

Belkhiter’s physicality and tactical nous were evident in their 0-0 draw against Tunisia, where she neutralized attacks with key interceptions.

Her matchup against Nigeria’s rotated forwards, potentially Chinwendu Ihezuo or Folashade Ijamilusi, will be pivotal in maintaining Algeria’s defensive solidity.

Chaima Bouheni: Algeria’s goalkeeper has been a standout, anchoring their historic group-stage campaign.

Bouheni’s vital saves against Botswana preserved their 1-0 lead, showcasing her reflexes and command of the penalty area.

Facing Nigeria’s potent attack, led by Rasheedat Ajibade and possibly Asisat Oshoala, Bouheni’s shot-stopping ability will be crucial to Algeria’s hopes of frustrating the Super Falcons.
