Nigeria 0 Algeria 0: Ajibade, Echegini, Ihezuo fire blanks as Super Falcons held by Fennecs
Published: July 13, 2025
Nigeria’s Super Falcons were frustrated to a goalless draw by Algeria in their final Group B match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca.
Despite already securing a quarter-final place, the nine-time champions pushed for victory to finish with a perfect group record but were repeatedly denied by a resilient Algerian defence.
From the outset, Nigeria dominated possession and created several openings. Jennifer Echegini was particularly lively, dribbling past defenders twice in the first half but failing to convert, with one effort sailing over the bar and another deflecting wide.
Chinwendu Ihezuo, who started after scoring from the bench in previous games, linked up well with Francesca Ordega, but Algeria’s backline held firm.
Rasheedat Ajibade also posed a constant threat, forcing corner kicks and drawing fouls near the penalty area.
Yet, each set-piece ended without reward as Algeria’s defenders.
In the second half, Echegini came closest, weaving past defenders before firing narrowly wide.
Ijamilisu Folashade also tested the Algerian keeper late on, while Ihezuo’s header drifted off target.
Algeria offered moments of danger on the counter but failed to truly trouble Nigeria’s defence.
Ultimately, the Super Falcons finish top of Group B with seven points, while Algeria settle for second place.
Despite the stalemate, Nigeria extend their unbeaten run in WAFCON group stages, but coach Justin Madugu will be keen to see sharper finishing in the knockout rounds.
