'Ready to contribute' – Rangers coach says Dessers is in contention to play v Panathinaikos
Published: July 21, 2025
Rangers head coach Russell Martin has expressed confidence in striker Cyriel Dessers ahead of the crucial UEFA Champions League secondround qualifier against Panathinaikos at Ibrox Stadium on Tuesday.
Speaking during Monday's pre-match press conference, Martin confirmed that Dessers, along with teammates Hamza Igamane and Djeidi Gassama, is fit to contribute in the two-legged tie, although none are expected to play a full 90 minutes.
"Cyriel, Hamza, and Djeidi are all ready to contribute, not ready for 90 minutes just yet, but we will see them at some point over the two ties," Martin told reporters at the pre-match press conference
Dessers’ involvement is seen as a major boost for Rangers, particularly after the Nigerian forward recovered from a recent injury.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a prolific 2024–25 campaign, scoring 18 goals in the Scottish Premiership and registering 36 goal involvements (29 goals, 7 assists) across 55 appearances in all competitions.
Having previously guided Feyenoord to the UEFA Conference League final in 2022, Dessers brings valuable continental experience to the Rangers attack.
Despite ongoing transfer speculation linking him with a move to Greek side AEK Athens, Martin’s remarks suggest the striker remains firmly committed to helping Rangers reach the Champions League group stage.
The Scottish side face a tough test against Panathinaikos, runners-up in the Greek Super League, but Martin will be hoping his team can seize the initiative in the home leg.
With Ibrox set to host a sell-out crowd, Rangers aim to take a vital step forward in their bid to return to Europe’s elite competition, with Dessers likely to play a key role in their pursuit.
