Montpellier appoint former Super Eagles forward John Utaka as Women's team coach
Published: August 07, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been informed that former Super Eagles forward John Chukwudi Utaka has been named the new head coach of Montpellier HSC Feminines, in what marks a major step forward in his coaching journey.
The appointment reunites the 43-year-old Nigerian with the club where he won the Ligue 1 title during the 2011–12 season.
Utaka, a cult hero at Stade de la Mosson, famously scored twice in the title-clinching 2-1 win against Auxerre.
Since retiring in 2018, he has built a promising coaching career, most recently serving as assistant coach to Montpellier’s U19 side. He also holds a UEFA A licence, which he earned in 2022.
His prior interim spell in charge of the women’s team in 2021 yielded a sixth-place league finish, proving his credentials to lead the side full-time.
Utaka’s return comes with a clear mandate to usher the team into a new era of ambition, development, and playoff contention.
Renowned for his tactical intelligence and player-focused philosophy, Utaka is expected to blend discipline with dynamism.
His vast international experience—including stints in Nigeria, Egypt, Qatar, France, England, and Turkey—adds depth to his perspective as one of the few African coaches in European women’s football.
In line with the club’s vision, Utaka aims to harness the potential of the squad while inspiring them to break new ground.
His appointment has been warmly received by supporters, many of whom hope to see his attacking flair as a player reflected in Montpellier’s playing style.
With the new season on the horizon, John Utaka now stands poised to write a fresh chapter in Montpellier’s history—this time from the touchline.
