Fabrizio Romano reveals why AC Milan pulled the plug on deal to sign Boniface
Published: August 24, 2025
AC Milan have ended their pursuit of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface after the Bayer Leverkusen forward failed his medical examinations, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The 24-year-old had traveled to Milan within the past 48 hours to undergo routine assessments ahead of a season-long loan switch that included a €5 million fee and a €24 million non-mandatory buy clause.
Boniface had also agreed personal terms on a long-term contract running until 2030, with the deal initially structured around a €30 million option to buy.
However, concerns arose during medical checks, particularly regarding Boniface’s right knee, which has a history of serious injury.
"AC Milan call Victor Boniface deal off as Nigerian striker did not pass the medical tests," Romano wrote on X.
"Despite verbal agreement for €5m loan fee and €24m buy clause with player in Milano in the last 48h, deal called off due to medical."
The Nigerian previously suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures and although he has since returned to top form, Milan’s medical staff reportedly advised against the transfer due to potential long-term risks.
The outcome prompted the Rossoneri to withdraw from negotiations, with the striker now set to return to Germany.
Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is said to have been keen on adding Boniface’s physicality and goalscoring instincts to his attack ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, but the club opted to prioritize squad reliability.
For Boniface, the failed move raises questions about his future and potential market value.
While he remains an integral figure at Leverkusen, uncertainty surrounding his fitness could impact interest from other clubs ahead of the winter transfer window.
