'Played his last game' – Rangers coach confirms Dessers is leaving the club before window closes
Published: August 31, 2025
Rangers manager Russell Martin has confirmed that Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers is expected to leave the club before the transfer window closes on Monday night.
Dessers made his return from injury in Sunday’s goalless draw against Celtic at Ibrox, coming on for Bojan Miovski with just eighteen minutes left to play.
However, the Nigerian international was spotted waving to the home fans in a gesture widely interpreted as a farewell to the club.
Speaking after the game, Martin admitted that Dessers, who finished as the club’s top scorer last season, has likely played his final match in Rangers colours.
"I think Cyriel has probably played his last game for the club," Martin told Sky Sports post-match.
The Rangers manager added that the deal represents good business for both parties, while also voicing uncertainty over the futures of some other players.
"He goes with everyone's best wishes. It's good business for us, it's good for him, the stage he's at in his career.
"I don't know what's going to happen in the next 24 hours with the rest of our guys."
Dessers has been strongly linked with moves to Serie A side Hellas Verona and Greek giants Panathinaikos, with reports suggesting that negotiations with the Athens-based club are now at an advanced stage.
With the Scottish transfer window set to close at 11pm on Monday, the Super Eagles striker will be keen to resolve his future and focus on international commitments.
Dessers has been named in Nigeria's 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Rwanda in September.
The 30-year-old will be eager to make an impact and secure a competitive appearance, having previously featured only in friendly matches.
