No agreement yet: Chelsea and Roma fail to agree on deal for tri-national forward George
Published: September 01, 2025
The future of Chelsea's English-Ghanaian-Nigerian winger Tyrique George is still unresolved after talks over a transfer to AS Roma stalled, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The 19-year-old, who had been linked with a move to the Italian side, saw the deal collapse as no agreement could be reached with Chelsea.
George, who made history on April 20, 2025, as the youngest Nigerian–eligible player to score for Chelsea in the Premier League at 19 years and 75 days, had attracted significant interest from Roma.
The club had been exploring options to strengthen their wide positions after failing to secure Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho.
Chelsea were reportedly open to a permanent transfer with a sell-on clause, but the negotiations did not yield a resolution.
The London-born player has enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Blues, contributing to Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League successes.
He scored one goal and provided two assists in 12 Conference League appearances, while also becoming Chelsea’s youngest scorer in the Club World Cup.
Despite his progress, George has reportedly been seeking regular first-team football, a factor that had prompted interest from multiple European clubs.
Bundesliga sides RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach were also monitoring the situation, with Leipzig preparing a formal offer, adding complexity to Roma’s pursuit.
An England U19 international, George remains eligible to represent Nigeria and Ghana, keeping international options on the table.
