Romano reveals Chelsea and Dortmund tried to sign Arsenal midfielder Nwaneri in the summer

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund both attempted to lure Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri away from the Emirates during the summer transfer window.

The 18-year-old midfielder was reportedly close to an exit earlier in the summer after contract talks with Arsenal stalled, with Nwaneri seeking assurances over playing time before committing his future.

According to Romano, Chelsea explored the possibility of including Nwaneri in discussions during talks involving winger Noni Madueke, while Dortmund were prepared to make a significant financial offer, including a sizeable signing fee, to secure the teenager's services.

"For Nwaneri two clubs really tried to get him when there was the chance to try to enter the negotiations and try to see what happens while Arsenal were still not agreeing on a new contract with the player," Romano said on his YouTube channel.

"One club was Chelsea. Chelsea were prepared to discuss Ethan Nwaneri in the conversations they had with (Noni) Madueke but then Arsenal stopped the election.

"And also, not only Chelsea, but also Borussia Dortmund were prepared to invest big money in Nwaneri in terms of contract, in terms of signing fee, in terms of contract to Arsenal.

"But Arsenal went very strong on the new contract negotiations and the player decided to extend his contract at Arsenal and to show his love to Arsenal and sign a new deal."

However, Arsenal eventually convinced Nwaneri to stay, with the teenager signing a new deal to continue his development under Mikel Arteta.

The midfielder enjoyed a breakout season last year, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 37 matches across all competitions.

With the return of club football, Nwaneri will be keen to continue his fine form and aim to repay the club's faith with another strong campaign.
