Besiktas provide injury update on Super Eagles midfielder Ndidi after return to Turkey
Published: September 11, 2025
Turkish Super Lig side Beşiktaş have issued an update on Wilfred Ndidi following the injury he sustained while on international duty with the Super Eagles in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa on Tuesday, September 9.
Ndidi was forced off around the 70th minute in Bloemfontein, with manager Eric Chelle introducing Crystal Palace’s new signing Christantus Uche as his replacement.
Before leaving the pitch, the former Leicester City midfielder passed the captain's armband to Alex Iwobi, the most capped Nigerian player on the field.
In their official statement, Beşiktaş confirmed that Ndidi has returned to Turkey after suffering an injury during the game against South Africa.
Medical examinations, including an MRI at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital, revealed a strain and bleeding in the posterior thigh muscle (semimembranosus), and the club’s medical team has already begun treatment.
Besiktas did not disclose Ndidi's expected return date, but he is likely to be sidelined for Saturday's home game against Istanbul Basaksehir.
The Nath Boys graduate joined Beşiktaş last month on a three-year contract, with the club retaining an option to extend the deal through the 2028–29 season.
Since making the switch, the Nigeria international has started in all four matches for which he has been available, amassing 340 minutes of action.
Eric Chelle will be monitoring his fitness closely, with the Super Eagles squad list for October's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin expected before the end of the month.
