'That's where their weakness is' – Ex-Liverpool star questions Chelsea defence, calls out Tosin
Published: September 14, 2025
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has voiced concerns over Chelsea’s defensive performance in their 2-2 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday night, singling out Tosin Adarabioyo’s role in the hosts’ opening goal.
Nicol pointed to the role of former Manchester City defender Tosin Adarabioyo in Brentford’s opening goal.
The lanky defender failed to clear a pass from Jordan Henderson in the 35th minute, which allowed Kevin Schade to slot home for the hosts.
Chelsea responded after the break with goals from Cole Palmer and Moisés Caicedo, but a late strike from Fábio Carvalho ensured Thomas Frank’s men salvaged a point.
Despite the Blues’ fightback, Nicol highlighted the defensive triangle of goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, Tosin, and Trevoh Chalobah as Chelsea’s biggest weakness.
"The little triangle between the center backs Tosin, Chalobah, and the goalkeeper Sanchez is really where their weakness is," he said on ESPN FC.
He further emphasized that the defensive weakness was clear in the opening goal, criticizing Tosin's failure to deal with Henderson’s cross.
"And we saw it with the first goal. I know is Fofana, maybe with Tosin on that occasion but regardless of who they put there that's where their weakness is and that's going to cost them."
The issue is will be a major concern for manager Enzo Maresca, particularly with England international Levi Colwill sidelined through injury.
Tosin, who joined Chelsea on a free transfer, has been tasked with stepping up in Colwill’s absence but has so far faced criticism for his display.
However, Maresca will be hoping for a stronger defensive showing from the 27-year-old in upcoming fixtures against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
