'I asked' – Iheanacho says Celtic captain let him take match-winning penalty against Kilmarnock

Celtic forward Kelechi Iheanacho has disclosed that he sought permission from the team captain Callum McGregor before stepping up to score the decisive penalty in their 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The Nigerian international, who joined the Scottish champions as a free agent in September, held his nerve in stoppage time to slot the ball past goalkeeper Max Stryjek and secure all three points for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The goal marked a dream debut for the 28-year-old amid doubts over whether he could quickly adapt to life at Celtic Park.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Iheanacho explained shared insight on what transpired before the penalty.

"Three points, massive. I asked the skipper to let me take the penalty and he said it was fine," Iheanacho was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Iheanacho also praised fellow summer signing Sebastian Tounekti for his performance, describing him as a key influence throughout the encounter.

"Big drama, big drama. [Sebastian Tounekti] made the difference in first half and second half."

The former Leicester City striker stressed the importance of making an early impact and expressed hope that the goal would be the first of many for the Hoops.

"It's very, very important to make my mark on my debut. Hopefully more to come," he said.

The win saw Celtic return to the summit of the Scottish Premiership table, edging Hearts on goal difference as the title race begins to take shape.
