Man Utd loanee Onana plays peacemaker as Onuachu loses his cool over disallowed goal
Published: September 14, 2025
Trabzonspor's Super Lig clash with Fenerbahce descended into controversy on Sunday, with Manchester United loanee Andre Onana forced to step in and calm down an enraged Paul Onuachu after his disallowed goal, according to Milliyet.
The match was dominated by VAR interventions and the first flashpoint arrived as early as the 11th minute.
Onuachu rose above Fenerbahce defender Milan Skriniar to win an aerial duel before finishing off the move with a header.
The towering striker wheeled away in celebration, only for Fenerbahce players to surround referee Ozan Ergun in protest.
After consulting VAR, Ergun was advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
The eventual decision was to disallow the goal, sparking fury from Onuachu.
The Nigerian international vehemently protested, shouting at officials and gesturing in frustration.
His anger earned him a yellow card and the situation threatened to escalate further until his teammate Onana stepped in.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper played the role of peacemaker, holding Onuachu back and speaking to him calmly as he tried to defuse the situation.
Onana’s intervention ensured the forward avoided further punishment, with tensions already running high in Istanbul.
Speaking in the mixed zone after the final whistle, Onuachu did not hold back in his criticism of officiating in the Turkish Super Lig.
"It's embarrassing to be honest, really embarrassing. They have to do something about this league. It's a shame, the whole world is seeing this," Onuachu fumed.
Onuachu rejoined Trabzonspor on a permanent basis during the summer transfer window and has registered two goals in the opening five Super Lig games.
