Official: Midtjylland welcome back history-making Nigerian goalkeeper after CD Mafra stint

FC Midtjylland have officially confirmed the return of Nigerian goalkeeper Mark Ugboh, who has been bought out of his contract with Portuguese side CD Mafra.

Ugboh made history in January 2022 when he became the first African goalkeeper to sign for the club.

Ugboh’s journey with Midtjylland began at the U19 level, where he quickly impressed with his composure, technical abilities, and self-taught goalkeeping skills developed in Nigeria.

His performances earned him recognition as one of the club’s brightest young talents.

Last summer, he moved to CD Mafra in Portugal to gain further experience and regular playing time in a European league.

The move back to Central Jutland was finalized in the closing days of the recent transfer window, signaling the club’s intent to integrate the 21-year-old into the first-team setup once his work permit is completed.

Midtjylland see Ugboh as a long-term prospect who can contribute immediately while also developing into a key figure for the future.

Ugboh’s return reinforces Midtjylland’s tradition of nurturing Nigerian talent, building on the pathway established through the partnership with FC Ebedei.

His unique journey as the club’s first African goalkeeper highlights the growing influence of African players at the Danish side, particularly in positions historically less represented by players from the continent.

Ugboh has received nineteen call-ups for first team games but has yet to make his competitive debut for Midtjylland.
