Why Boniface was left out of Werder Bremen's starting XI against Borussia Monchengladbach

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface made his Werder Bremen debut on Sunday evening, coming off the bench in the 4-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, despite expectations for him to start.

The 24-year-old Nigerian replaced Romano Schmid in the 75th minute and immediately impressed, providing an assist for Justin Njinmah's late goal at Borussia Park.

His substitute role, however, came as a surprise to many, especially after he trained consistently during the international break and with several key players sidelined by injury.

The situation has further raised doubt, with many questioning his fitness, following controversy before his loan move on deadline day.

According to German outlet Bild, Boniface's introduction from the bench was a precautionary move.

Having struggled with injuries last season, Bremen's coaching staff are determined to reintegrate him gradually to avoid setbacks.

Following his bright cameo, the striker is expected to earn his first start against SC Freiburg at the Weserstadion next weekend.

The Nigerian striker is likely to replace Marco Grüll, the energetic Austrian striker, who is still chasing his first goal of the season.

With Bremen desperate to recover from a poor start to the campaign and maintain the current form, coach Horst Steffen will be counting on Boniface to rediscover his top form and drive the team forward.
