PL2: Chido Obi finds the net against Liverpool as Man Utd maintain 100 percent record
Published: September 21, 2025
Denmark U21 international of Nigerian descent Chido Obi continued his fine form as Manchester United claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool in a Premier League 2 fixture at the Academy Training Ground in Merseyside on Sunday afternoon.
The match began with tributes to former Liverpool Women's coach Matt Beard, who sadly passed away at the age of 47.
The contest also had strong Nigerian representation, with five players of Nigerian descent involved.
Wellity Lucky captained Liverpool, while Emmanuel Airoboma and Fola Onanuga were introduced in the second half.
For United, Obi started up front, with Victor Musa coming on after 76 minutes.
Liverpool made the brighter start and took the lead inside ten minutes when Michael Laffey rose highest to head home from close range.
But United grew into the game, and just before half-time Obi restored parity, finishing calmly after being teed up by Tyler Fletcher.
The visitors pressed for a winner after the break and were rewarded nine minutes from time.
Obi's strike was parried by Liverpool goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, only for Jaydan Kamason to react quickest and slot home the rebound to seal the points.
Musa could have added a third late on, but his effort was superbly denied by Pecsi.
Obi's goal means he has now scored in three consecutive Premier League 2 matches, adding to his strikes against Norwich City and Manchester City.
The result keeps Manchester United top of the Premier League 2 standings, with a perfect return of 12 points from four games.
