BBC PL TOTW: Fulham ace Iwobi named in midfield alongside Liverpool, Leeds, Man Utd stars
Published: September 22, 2025
Alex Iwobi has earned a spot in the BBC Premier League Team of the Week, joining stars from Liverpool, Manchester United and Leeds United in a four-man midfield after an outstanding display on Matchday 5.
The list, selected by former Watford striker Troy Deeney, also features players from Burnley, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland, meaning ten Premier League teams were represented in the Best XI.
Iwobi was officially the standout performer as Fulham came from a goal down to beat Brentford 3-1 in a west London derby at Craven Cottage on Saturday night.
A Josh King error allowed Mikkel Damsgaard to open the scoring in the 20th minute, but the Nigeria international levelled in the 38th minute before setting up Harry Wilson just 98 seconds later, sending Fulham into the break 2-1 up.
Joining the Fulham number 17 in midfield are Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Anton Stach (Leeds United) and Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United).
In goal is Burnley's Martin Dubravka, protected by a back four consisting of Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell, Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi, Newcastle United defender Sven Botman and Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams, while Sunderland's Wilson Isidor and Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike are the forwards.
Explaining his decision to name Iwobi in the Team of the Week, Deeney noted: "Great goal and great assist in their win over Brentford. I love Alex's approach to football.
"You know you're going to get a 7.5 or eight out of 10 every single week - effort and endeavour.
"His goal was a wonderful finish, on the half-volley through the defender's legs. And the weight of pass on his assist for Harry Wilson's goal was fantastic.
"If that pass was too hard Wilson would have had to take a touch and the chance was gone."
Iwobi has one goal and two assists after five matches in the English top-flight.
