Brighton coach praises Nnadozie after losing Women's Yashin Trophy to Chelsea goalkeeper
Published: September 23, 2025
Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has earned widespread acclaim despite finishing fourth in the inaugural Women’s Yashin Trophy at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, with the award going to Chelsea’s standout keeper.
The 24-year-old Nigerian international was recognized for her exceptional performances during a summer that saw her help Nigeria lift the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for a record tenth time.
Nnadozie joined Brighton in July from Paris FC ahead of WAFCON 2024, where she produced a series of commanding displays.
She kept four consecutive clean sheets, guiding Nigeria through group-stage victories over Tunisia (3-0) and Botswana (1-0), a 0-0 draw against Algeria, and a 5-0 quarter-final win over Zambia.
Her consistent form was pivotal as the Super Falcons went on to lift the continental trophy, marking Nnadozie’s second WAFCON triumph as a player.
Her performances earned her the Best Goalkeeper award at the tournament and a historic nomination for the Ballon d’Or Women’s Yashin Trophy, making her the first African goalkeeper to be recognized on football’s biggest stage.
While she did not claim the prize, her nomination represents a milestone for African women’s football.
Albion Women’s coach Dario Vidosic praised Nnadozie’s achievement.
"They both had a tremendous summer, and lifting continental trophies showcases how important they were to the success of their national teams," he told the official website of the club.
"For Chiamaka to be recognized at this level is incredible, and she should be extremely proud
Nnadozie’s Ballon d’Or recognition emphasizes her growing status as one of the world’s top goalkeepers.
Her performances at WAFCON and her move to Brighton highlight her influence on and off the pitch, setting the stage for further milestones in her burgeoning career.
