'The sharpest of Arsenal players' - Redknapp lauds Nwaneri after impressive display v Port Vale
Published: September 25, 2025
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has praised Ethan Nwaneri following his impressive performance in Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Port Vale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Nwaneri featured for the entire duration at Vale Park as goals from Eberechi Eze and Leandro Trossard sealed Arsenal’s progression to the fourth round.
Speaking on Sky Sports during the game, Redknapp described the 18-year-old as one of the Gunners’ brightest players on the night, alongside summer signing Eberechi Eze.
"Saka will get an hour and then change it, ready for the weekend at Newcastle. That game is so important. I've been impressed with Nwaneri, he's been the sharpest of Arsenal's players, and Eze,” Redknapp said.
Nwaneri, who extended his contract in the summer with assurances of more first-team opportunities, delivered a lively display in midfield.
He completed 88 percent of his passes, won three ground duels, and was a constant threat with his creativity.
With captain Martin Odegaard sidelined, his performance was a timely boost for Mikel Arteta ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle.
Nwaneri will be hoping his display against Port Vale earns him more minutes when Arsenal face Newcastle on Sunday.
