'You're in trouble' - Fulham's Bassey names Liverpool forward as toughest Premier League opponent
Published: September 26, 2025
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has named Liverpool star Mohamed Salah as the toughest player he has faced in the Premier League, praising the Egyptian’s influence both on and off the pitch.
The Fulham defender made the revelation during a ‘Best Friend Test’ interview with Sky Sports alongside his Nigeria teammate Alex Iwobi.
Asked to guess his answer, Iwobi correctly picked Salah.
Explaining his choice, Bassey described the Liverpool forward as a nightmare to defend against.
"Mohamed Salah is unbelievable. He’s such a baller. When you get dragged out to defend him, you're in trouble," Bassey said.
"Obviously, when we play Liverpool, we usually go half man-for-man, so I’ll often face him directly. I’ve played against him twice, and he’s always a handful."
Beyond the pitch, Bassey also highlighted Salah’s impact on African football in the Premier League, naming him the best African player to grace the English top flight.
"Salah is a three-time PFA Player of the Year, and what I will say is that he’s done some unbelievable things in the game," he added.
"He’s also helped promote African football. I’m not saying Yaya Toure didn’t, but I feel like in this generation Salah has had a bigger global impact.”
Salah, who is yet to face Bassey this season, has scored four goals in 10 games against the Cottagers.
