Former Chelsea forward slams Bassey over costly error in Fulham's defeat to Aston Villa

Former Chelsea forward Chris Sutton has criticized Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey for his shaky defensive display during Fulham’s 3-1 loss to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.

Bassey was nearly punished in the first half after a poor touch gifted Villa captain John McGinn a clear sight at goal.

The Scottish midfielder raced through but dragged his effort wide, sparing the Nigerian international from an embarrassing moment.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton did not hold back in his assessment.

"Bassey was heavy with the touch and the ball was never on," Sutton said.

"McGinn should bury that. He knows that is a horrible miss. That's a big chance not taken."

McGinn eventually made amends, scoring Villa's second goal as Unai Emery’s men came from behind to claim all three points.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian International, who featured for the entirety of the match, was later booked in the second half for a foul on McGinn.

The 25-year-old brought down the Aston Villa captain in the 55th minute after losing track of his run.

His compatriot Alex Iwobi started the game but was withdrawn after 65 minutes for new signing Kevin, while Samuel Chukwueze made his long-awaited Premier League debut, replacing Harry Wilson in the final 10 minutes.
