Award-winning journalist criticises Osimhen's decision in Galatasaray's win over Liverpool
Published: October 02, 2025
Speaking on the Sports Digitale YouTube channel, respected Turkish journalist Şansal Büyüka has offered a critical assessment of Victor Osimhen's decision-making during Galatasaray's 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.
Making his first start after recovering from an ankle injury he suffered while on international duty on September 6, Osimhen converted a penalty in the 16th minute, scoring what proved to be the game winning goal.
The goal took his tally in the Champions League to ten, making him the first Nigerian player to reach double figures in the competition.
Büyüka highlighted that the Super Eagles striker, renowned for his work rate, was involved in a decisive moment early in the second half when he opted to go for goal rather than setting up Yunus Akgün, who was better positioned.
He added that the chance could have doubled Galatasaray's advantage at a key stage of the match, but the opportunity went begging.
Despite the missed chance, Galatasaray went on to secure a memorable win over the Premier League champions, with Osimhen named Player of the Match by UEFA's Technical Observer Group.
A veteran journalist, Büyüka was recognised in 2023 with the prestigious Burhan Felek Press Service Award by the Turkish Journalists' Association for his contributions to sports journalism.
