'Wondered what he was trying to tell us' - Werder Bremen chief on Boniface's social media posts
Published: October 07, 2025
Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has commented on Victor Boniface's recent performances and off-field behavior following the club’s 1-0 home win against FC St. Pauli.
The Nigerian striker, who entered the match as an 80th-minute substitute, missed a clear opportunity in stoppage time, a moment that has drawn widespread discussion.
Fritz highlighted that while Boniface’s missed chance was notable, the more important aspect is how the player approaches his opportunity at Werder Bremen.
"He has to be aware that Werder is an opportunity for him – because there will also be a time after Bremen and Leverkusen," Fritz said, as quoted by Deichstube.
The sporting director emphasized that the club aims to support Boniface in reaching his best form, acknowledging that the striker may take time to regain peak fitness.
"It is our goal to get him into the best possible shape – because then he will be incredibly valuable to us," Fritz added.
The discussion surrounding Boniface has not been limited to his performance on the pitch.
His social media activity has also been a topic of attention, with Fritz drawing a light-hearted comparison.
"I'd say we’ve all stood in front of abstract art in a gallery and wondered what the artist was trying to tell us.
"We at Werder ask ourselves the same thing about him," Fritz said with a grin.
He clarified, however, that as long as Boniface's posts align with Werder Bremen's values, they are acceptable.
Fritz also addressed the striker’s Behavior within the team, noting that Boniface is an introverted individual but maintains a positive attitude.
"When you see him in the locker room, he always has a smile on his face."
Boniface was not invited to Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.
