Akintola named in EFL Championship Team of the Week after first goal in Hull City colours
Published: October 06, 2025
Hull City's Nigerian attacker David Akintola has been named in the English Football League Championship Team of the Week following his decisive performance in the clash against Sheffield United.
The Tigers secured bragging rights in the Yorkshire derby with a 1-0 victory, thanks to Akintola's first goal in Hull colours after his summer transfer from Rizespor.
The 30th-minute strike came from a sublime half-volley, which Akintola expertly controlled on his chest before unleashing a shot that took a deflection and sailed into the far post.
Prior to this breakthrough, the 29-year-old had accumulated four hours on the pitch across seven Championship appearances, making his impact against the Blades all the more impressive.
In the Championship Team of the Week's 4-4-2 formation, Akintola features in midfield alongside Matt Grimes (Coventry City), Brandon Jeremy Ngakia (Watford), and Thomas-Asante (Coventry City).
Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur is shielded by a back four comprising Zak Sturge (Millwall), Sean McLoughlin (Blackburn Rovers), Bobby Thomas (Coventry City), and James Dunne (Queens Park Rangers), while the forward line includes Oliver McBurnie (Hull City) and Haji Wright (Coventry City).
Statistics from Whoscored.com underline Akintola's standout performance, awarding him a rating of 8.06.
He registered two shots, one of which found the net, won two fouls, led his team with three tackles, made five clearances and completed 75 percent of his passes.
