Chelsea hold no interest in Flying Eagles winger amid reports of a contract offer
Published: October 09, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Premier League giants Chelsea are not pursuing Nigeria U20 international Tahir Maigana, despite reports suggesting that the Blues had made an offer to the Wireless FC winger.
Speculation surfaced this week that Maigana, 17, and 16-year-old compatriot Abduljelil Kamaldeen had both been offered study scholarships by the London club.
However, Chelsea cannot legally sign foreign players under the age of 18, in line with Premier League and Fifa regulations.
While it is true that Chelsea have shown genuine interest in Kamaldeen, there is no concrete move in place for Maigana at this stage.
Maigana was one of the standout performers for the Flying Eagles at the Fifa U20 World Cup, featuring in all four of Nigeria's matches before their elimination by Argentina in the round of 16.
Although he did not record a goal or assist, his pace and attacking instincts caught the eye of scouts.
A left-footed winger who thrives on the right flank, Maigana has drawn early comparisons with Arsenal and England star Bukayo Saka.
Portuguese giants Benfica and several Belgian clubs monitored the youngster during the World Cup and could revisit their interest in the coming months.
Chelsea have not signed a player directly from Nigeria since acquiring Kenneth Omeruo from Sunshine Stars in January 2012, following his exploits at the Fifa U20 World Cup in Colombia.
The club's academy currently features several players of Nigerian descent, including Chizaram Ezenwata, Tayo Subuloye, Richard Olise and Landon Emenalo.
