Afcon 2025: Ghana's all-time top scorer Gyan names Nigeria, Morocco and Ivory Coast as favourites
Published: November 19, 2025
Ghana's all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan has backed the Super Eagles as one of the favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Gyan made the remarks on Wednesday night during the CAF Awards, where he expressed disappointment over Ghana's failure to qualify for the continental tournament but found consolation in the Black Stars' successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"We have a lot of giants who are going there. Ghana is out which we are very disappointed but it is okay, we qualify to the World Cup," he teased.
The former Ghana captain praised Nigeria's performance at the last AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire and listed them among the strongest contenders for the upcoming edition alongside hosts Morocco and defending champions Ivory Coast.
"Nigeria did well, they were close last two years. Ivory Coast did well, we have a lot of teams.
"Morocco is also a strong contender, who are also doing well. I will say these three countries that I have mentioned, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco," he added.
Nigeria, who finished runners-up after losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast in the 2023 final in Abidjan, will compete in Group C alongside Uganda, Tunisia, and Tanzania.
Following their disappointing failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after losing to DR Congo, the Super Eagles are expected to push hard for a fourth AFCON title as redemption.
