Osimhen or Achraf Hakimi? Ikpeba reveals his choice for African Player of the Year
Published: November 19, 2025
Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has tipped Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi to win the 2025 CAF Men’s Player of the Year Award ahead of Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen.
Ikpeba shared his views on Wednesday night during the CAF Awards ceremony, where he praised Osimhen's immense contribution but argued that Hakimi's achievements with Paris Saint-Germain give him the edge.
Osimhen, who won the award last year, is among the final three nominees alongside Hakimi and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
The Galatasaray striker earned his nomination after a remarkable season in Turkey, scoring 37 goals and providing eight assists in 41 appearances to inspire the Yellow-Reds to a domestic double.
Despite Osimhen’s sensational campaign, Ikpeba believes Hakimi's exploits in PSG’s treble-winning season make him the standout candidate.
"We are disappointed we are not going to the World Cup but Victor has been outstanding his passion and determination when he plays for the national team as no limits," Ikpeba said.
“For the three players, I think Hakimi has been brilliant, won the Ligue 1, the Champions League, and he won everything with PSG and he should be deserving but if Victor wins it I will take it.
"But I think for the beauty of the beautiful game in Africa, if it goes to Hakimi, he is a deserving winner.”
Hakimi played a key role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season, even scoring in the final against Inter Milan.
Meanwhile, Osimhen will not be present at the CAF Awards ceremony after sustaining an injury during Nigeria’s 2–0 defeat to DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs on Sunday night.
