Keshi's Resignation Shocks Joseph Yobo
Published: February 12, 2013
Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to her third African Cup of Nations triumph barely 48 hours ago, has sensationally quit as the Nigeria boss.
Talks are ongoing between the former New Nigeria Bank libero and the football fraternity for Keshi to rescind his decision to call time on his 15 - month reign as the handler of the African champions.
In an interview with local media, Fenerbahçe centre back and Super Eagles skipper Joseph Yobo says he is shocked by the resignation of Stephen Keshi.
''It came as a shock, it was a big surprise. I spoke with him, we didn't really know the reason behind his resignation which is coming when we just won a trophy. It is celebration time for us all. I am not sure what the situation is, probably he will be called back. We are hoping and looking forward to that,'' Yobo told Brila FM.
Joseph Yobo and his colleagues are expected in the country from Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, and a grand reception awaits the team from grateful Nigerians.
''We can't wait. It is a special moment, we need to enjoy this moment. It does not come always. It took us 19 years for this big moment and now we have it. Football has struggled for a long time in Nigeria, now it is coming back. It is a special moment for the players, football fans and a special moment for me,'' Yobo said.
While the news of the resignation will shock a lot of people, tension had been growing between Stephen Keshi and the Nigeria Football Federation hierarchy after the Super Eagles struggled in their first three matches at the African Cup of Nations.
