Kelechi Iheanacho Picks Man City Ahead Of Nigeria - Manchester Evening News
Published: June 22, 2016
Kelechi Iheanacho has opted not to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games and has decided to link up with Manchester City squad for pre-season training instead.
Manchester Evening News says City were under no obligation to release the Super Eagles striker as the competition is outside Fifa’s window for international games, and new coach Guardiola has instructed that all the players should take part in pre-season training.
As previously reported by this website, Iheanacho was named to Nigeria’s provisional roster for the Olympic Games and had wanted to represent his country but changed his mind after extensive talks with Manchester City suits.
The 19-year-old striker would have missed pre-season games against Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, and would have been unavailable for selection in Premier League fixtures against Sunderland and Stoke City if he had represented Nigeria in Brazil and they qualify for the showpiece game.
Iheanacho started seven games in the Premier League in the 2015-2016 campaign and scored eight goals.
