Exclusive: Chippa United GK Akpeyi Will Not Rejoin Nigeria U23s Until July 22
Published: July 11, 2016
Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is still in line to represent Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games, allnigeriasoccer.com has been informed.
Few days after the Dream Team VI lost 1-0 to Mexico in a friendly, Akpeyi boarded a plane bound for South Africa as he was instructed by his club to report for pre-season training.
All things being equal, the former Warri Wolves glovesman will fly out to Atlanta to link up with the squad on Friday, July 22.
While it is a foregone conclusion that the goalie will miss the upcoming friendly against Charleston Battery FC on July 16, he could be considered for selection in the final warmup game against Honduras on July 27.
Daniel Akpeyi was thrashing out a new deal with Chippa United at the end of last season but everything indicates that he will be staying put in Port Elizabeth, having resumed pre-season preparations with the team.
