Rep Says Liverpool To Decide Future Of Nigeria U23s Striker Taiwo Awoniyi
Published: July 24, 2016
A representative of Taiwo Awoniyi, Seyi Olofinjana, has deflected questions about the future of the Nigeria U23 international at Liverpool following the expiration of his loan agreement at FSV Frankfurt.
The 18-year-old was loaned out to the German club last summer after failing to secure a work permit that will enable him play in the Premier League.
Up to this very moment, Awoniyi does not qualify for a work permit, having joined the Reds after a £400,000 fee (including commission paid to intermediaries) was agreed, and he is not one of the top earners at the club.
Asked if Awoniyi will train with Liverpool or move elsewhere next season, Olofinjana replied : “You might need to speak with Liverpool regarding Taiwo. He is their player for now.”
With only five weeks left before the close of the transfer window in most European Leagues, Awoniyi would have used the Olympic Games to showcase his skills but has only been named on Nigeria’s alternate squad.
It is not all bleak for the attacker though as he may still be included in the Dream Team VI 18-man roster, with Osmanlıspor’s Umar Aminu yet to confirm his availability for the competition in Brazil.
