England Overtake Nigeria In Race For Chelsea Star In The Making Tariq Uwakwe
Published: October 08, 2016
The English Football Association have leapfrogged their Nigerian counterparts in the race to secure the international future of Chelsea whizkid Tariq Uwakwe, allnigeriasoccer.com understands.
Still only 16, Uwakwe has all the hallmarks of a modern day midfielder as he is capable of playing central midfield, left-wing and left back.
The English FA moved fast to cap him by handing him a late call-up for England U18s two international friendlies against Sweden in Scandinavia and he was named on the bench in the first game on Friday.
Prior to his maiden invitation to the English youth team, Uwakwe had seriously considered the idea of representing Nigeria internationally because he was snubbed by bis country of birth.
The Londoner joined Chelsea at the age of eight and scored his first goal for their youth team in August as the U18s beat Southampton in the U18 Premier League.
