Cameroon 1 Nigeria 1 : Flamingos Fail To Reach World Cup After Late Goal Wrongly Disallowed
Published: February 18, 2018
Two weeks after playing a 2-2 draw with Cameroon Women's National U17 team, the Flamingos forced their hosts to a 1-1 draw at the Yaoundé Omnisports Stadium, but it was not enough to see them qualify for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Uruguay.
The Cameroonians started the stronger of the two teams and were unfortunate not to take the lead inside two minutes when a lob from Henriette Monkam hit the woodwork.
On 16 minutes, Flora Kameni opened the scoring for the hosts but Nigeria could not respond before the break.
Just a minute after the restart, a great free-kick from Monday Gift was saved brilliantly by goalkeeper Marina Ngo Esse, before Chinyere Igboamalu came close to equalizing in the 67th minute.
On 78 minutes, Martha Vincent scored from close range to ensure a nervy ending but the Cameroonian defense was not breached again.
Nigeria thought they had scored a winner in the closing minutes but the referee disallowed the goal.
Nigeria Starting XI: Obia Christiana, Oshobukola Stella, Ilivieda Blessing, Esther Momoh, Mabokanje Fehintola, Bolaji Olamide, Omewa Joy, Igboamalu Grace, Ikehua Osaretin, Amoo Bashirat, Monday Gift
