Werder Bremen defender Agu will not make cap-tying appearance for Super Eagles at Afcon 2025
Published: November 03, 2025
Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu is set to miss a crucial opportunity to officially cap-tie himself to the Super Eagles, with his availability for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations now uncertain.
The 26-year-old remains sidelined following a syndesmosis ligament injury sustained during Werder Bremen’s 1-0 home victory over FC St. Pauli in early October.
Agu, a former Germany U21 international, has yet to play in a competitive match for Nigeria.
He missed recent FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying fixtures against Lesotho and Benin, matches that would have officially committed him to the Super Eagles.
His participation in upcoming games, including the crucial playoff against Gabon on November 13, is now unlikely.
Werder Bremen's head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, said, "His return will definitely not take place until the new year," as quoted by DeichStube.
Niemeyer emphasized that the exact timing of Agu’s return remains uncertain.
The defender is in regular contact with Werder Bremen’s medical department during his recovery.
To provide variety during his rehabilitation, Agu did not complete the initial phase in Bremen.
Niemeyer explained: "He had surgery in Berlin and also spent the first two weeks of his rehabilitation there."
The versatile full-back will now continue his rehabilitation in Bremen.
With the new year now set as the earliest possible return date, Agu will certainly be omitted from the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
