Man Utd 2 Leicester City 1 : Iheanacho & Ndidi Show Promise In Season Opener
Published: August 10, 2018
Manchester United kicked off the new Premier League season with a narrow 2-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday evening.
Leicester City's Nigerian duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi were both named in the Foxes starting XI in Manchester while Layton Ndukwu who is classed as an U21 will have to wait much longer for senior team action.
Ndidi tested David De Gea with a fine effort after 15 minutes when he collected a lose ball to let fly at the goalkeeper from the edge of the area but his effort was well saved.
It was Iheanacho's turn 14 minutes later when he combined with Maddison but the duo failed to really trouble De Gea.
Both Super Eagles players went the distance for their team in the cracker though neither could conjure the magic to spare their side's blushes.
Paul Pogba opened the scoring after just three minutes when he converted from the spot before Luke Shaw added a second for the hosts in the dying embers of the second half.
Jamie Vardy came off the bench to convert for Leicester City from a rebound, setting up a tensed finish but Jose Mourinho's team were able to hold onto their slender lead and see out the victory.
Claude Puel's men will look to rouse themselves from the opening day defeat when they take on Bright Enobakhare's Wolverhampton next weekend.
