Everton Boss Offers Advice To Nigerian Winger: Show Your Quality On The Pitch
Published: September 01, 2018England U21 star of Nigerian parentage, Ademola Lookman, made his first appearance of the season as Everton were held to a 1-1 draw by Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, coming off the bench as replacement for the injured Theo Walcott in the 57th minute.
The winger had been linked with a deadline day move to RB Leipzig but the Toffees refused to do business with their German counterparts, meaning the youngster will remain at Goodison Park until at least January 2019.
The Nigeria Football Federation target was not considered for selection against Rotherham United in the Carabao Cup second round due to a groin complaint but returned to full training ahead of the visit of the Terriers.
Speaking post-match, Everton coach Marco Silva has advised Lookman (and other young players) to show his quality as he aims to break into the starting lineup.
''They have to show their quality on the pitch. Today we had not just
Calvert-Lewin and Lookman but Tom Davies and four or five players aged
21,'' he said.
Lookman would have become the most expensive player of Nigerian descent in history if Everton had accepted a bid of 28 million pounds from RB Leipzig before the close of the transfer window.
