2019 AFCON: Rohr Vows Super Eagles Won't Make The Same Mistake They Did Against Argentina
Published: November 23, 2018
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has vowed that his players won't make the same mistake they did at the 2018 World Cup, where they were on the brink of qualifying for the last sixteen, only for Marcos Rojo to volley home the winner for Argentina with four minutes left.
Despite the Super Eagles being a young team, the German is optimistic that they can win the Africa Cup of Nations, and pointed out that tactical discipline helped the team earn a 1-1 draw against South Africa last week instead of going out for a win and end up losing the game.
''When you have a young team, you can be sure that they can improve and if you go to a tournament, it is to win,'' Rohr disclosed at a media parley with Sports Editors on Friday.
''With our humility and experience of the World Cup, they have to show they won't make the same mistakes, for example few minutes to the end of the game against Argentina.
''We showed it already in South Africa, it was a similar situation. With a draw we are qualified and we didn't make the same mistake where the players forgot to defend the result not absolutely to win.
''I don't believe we are too young to win, six or seven month before us. If we have a good preparation and no injuries, we can be one of the teams to win the Africa Cup of Nations.''
Since Rohr's appointment as coach of the Super Eagles in August 2016, the national team have only lost once against African opposition which was against South Africa on match day one of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.
