Chelsea Loanee Omeruo Excellent In Leganes Defeat To Barcelona, Sees Yellow
Published: January 21, 2019
Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo was in action for 90 minutes on Sunday evening as his Spanish La Liga side Leganes were defeated 3-1 by league leaders Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
Ousmane Dembele put the Blaugranes ahead in the 32nd minute when he was teed up by Jordi Alba who had acres of space to find the former Borussia Dortmund forward.
Martin Braithwaite equalised for Leganes in the 57th minute but Luis Suarez put Barca ahead again rather controversially as he fouled goalkeeper Pichu Cuéllar for the hosts' second goal of the night.
Lionel Messi who came off the bench to the delight of the Barcelona fans grabbed the third goal in added time of the second half when he finished off a flowing move with Alba once again the assist provider.
One of the interesting battles on the night was the one between Omeruo and Luis Suarez which culminated in a 30th minute yellow card for the Nigerian. The caution was his third of the campaign.
The game was the 13th of the season in the league for the centre back who is on loan from English Premier League giants Chelsea.
There was an injury scare for Omeruo in the 53rd minute when Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena fouled him which prompted referee Ricardo De Burgos to stop play momentarily.
Ernesto Valverde's men have now extended their lead in the table by five points over Atletico Madrid, with 46 points now garnered.
Barcelona were shocked by Leganes 2-1 in the reverse fixture on 26 September 2018.
