'We Don't Have Stars Like Okocha, Kanu & Amokachi' - Rohr Admits No Marquee Players In Eagles AFCON Squad
Published: June 20, 2019
Gernot Rohr has admitted that there are no marquee players in the Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations squad and he is banking on teamwork for the team to succeed during the tournament in Egypt.
On an African perspective, Rohr is characteristically playing down any hype surrounding the Super Eagles, with as many as eleven players named to the roster on the books of clubs in top five European Leagues.
In addition, the likes of Obi Mikel, Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa have Premier League experience under their belts and have racked up over 195 caps between them.
''I think lot of teams can dream of winning the trophy. We have the experience from the FIFA World Cup but again, we have a young team. We were the youngest at the World Cup and probably, we will still be the youngest at the AFCON,'' said Rohr to CAF's official website.
''We don't have stars like in the past where Nigeria had the likes of Austin 'Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, or Daniel Amokachi.

''We have to work with what we have and take a game at a time. I am hoping we can go far with this strategy. We have a young team and team work is our strength.''
Nigeria have reached the semi-final stage or further in 14 of their 17 appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations including 11 of the last 12.
