2019 AFCON: Four Takeaways From Nigeria's Shock 2-0 Loss To Madagascar
Published: June 30, 2019
Izuchukwu Okosi takes a look at the four takeaways from the shocking 2-0 loss suffered by the Super Eagles against Madagascar.
1. Mikel's Off Day
There was so much expectations on the shoulder of Mikel ahead of the AFCON but his performance on Sunday left so much to be desired.
Mikel needs to improve subsequently or the call for his retirement will hit the roof top!
2. Ighalo And Etebo Won Tackles
The duo of Odion Ighalo and Oghenekaro Etebo won lots of tackles in the game. Before it all went wrong eventually for the Eagles, Ighalo had to drift back and win balls.
3. And No Support For Ighalo
The China based striker was mostly isolated barring a few times that Ahmed Musa troubled the Madagascan defence.
Perhaps Gernot Rohr could implement a two man strike force in the Round of 16 to reduce the pressure on Ighalo.
4. The Improved Support From The Nigerian Fans
The Nigeria Football Supporters Club were in the stands to cheer the Super Eagles against Madagascar and that was pleasing to see. Unfortunately the performance on the evening did not match the support.
