AFCON 2019: Super Eagles Have A Point To Prove Against Defending Champions Cameroon
Published: July 03, 2019
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were initially tipped by pundits and reporters to battle the Black Stars of Ghana in the round-16 of this year's AFCON tournament based on the initial Group F standings.
Luckily for Nigeria, there was a last-minute change to the group standings as Cameroon, who played an unconvincing goalless draw with Benin Republic, became the runner-up while the Black Stars progressed through to the next round as group winners.
This means that we're set to witness a repeat of last year's World Cup qualifying game between the Super Eagles and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Saturday.
The relieved Super Eagles have a brighter chance of defeating the Indomitable Lions compare to Ghana, but you can't take anything away from Clarence Seedorf's men considering they are the defending champions.
Having lost 4-0 to Gernot Rohr's side in 2018, the current AFCON title holders will come into the encounter with a mindset of revenging the surprise defeat they suffered at the nest of champions Stadium in Uyo.
However, it is the Nigerian side who have a lot to prove after their humiliating defeat to AFCON debutants Madagascar in Alexandria on Sunday.
The Eagles were totally outclassed by the African Minnows, but the clash with the Cameroonians offers them an opportunity to prove their class and quality once again.
Interestingly, both countries are among the best footballing nations in the continent, hence, the Super Eagles won't be complacent just as we saw against Madagascar.
Can the three-time African champions make it another rain of goals against the defending champions on Saturday? Only time will tell.
