Three-time African champions Nigeria suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Algeria in the semifinal of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening after Riyad Mahrez scored a stunning added time free-kick to secure a win for Algeria.

From the statistics as published by Whoscored.com, the Super Eagles players had better figures in defensive-related statistics than the Algerians which may suggest that they were under pressure.

Nigeria attempted 11 shots, three more than the North Africans,  with six of their efforts hitting the target.

Porto defender Chidozie Awaziem (3), Chelsea star Kenneth Omeruo (8) and Udinese's William Troost-Ekong (5) recorded game-high figures in interceptions, clearances and aerial duels won.

Awaziem's four tackles was the most by a Super Eagles player but one less than Adlène Guédioura.

Six players attempted two shots each; Sofiane Feghouli, Ismael Bennacer, Baghdad Bounedjah, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Odion Ighalo.

Youcef Belaïli was the top performer in terms of key passes with four, one more than Samuel Chukwueze.

There was a three-way tie for the most dribbles, with Ndidi, Belaïli and Bennacer completing two take-ons each.

Oghenekaro Etebo, Djamel Benlamri and Bennacer won the most fouls (5 each), while Ighalo committed five fouls, more than any other player.

Of the 22 players that started the game, Aissa Mandi had the highest pass completion rate with 92.2 percent. Chukwueze was the Super Eagles top player with a passing accuracy of 91.3 percent.

Omeruo recorded a game-high 57 passes, ahead of Ndidi (55) and Troost-Ekong (54).
