One Champions League Record Held By Babayaro That Cannot Be Broken By Barcelona's Ansu Fati
Published: September 17, 2019
Barcelona super kid Ansu Fati could become the youngest scorer in Champions League history if he finds the net against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening, according to UEFA's official website.
Having honed his skills in the 2018-2019 UEFA Youth League, Fati has emerged as the breakout star so far in this season's La Liga, scoring in each of his last two games while providing an assist.
Aged 16 years and 322 days today, the winger would become the youngest Barcelona player to feature in the Champions League if he plays against Dortmund, overtaking Bojan Krkic who made his debut for the Blaugrana against Lyon in 2007 at 17 years and 22 days.
Chelsea legend Celestine Babayaro became the youngest player in UEFA Champions League history when he started for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucharest in the 1994-95 group stage, aged 16 years and 87 days old on November 23, 1994, a record which still stands to this day and cannot be broken by Fati.
The former Nigeria international has an unwanted Champions League record, being the youngest player to be sent off in the competition, 37 minutes into his debut against Steaua.
Meanwhile, ex-Inter Milan striker Obafemi Martins is the youngest Nigerian player to score in the Champions League, with his 36th minute goal against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on March 19, 2003.
Martins was aged 18 years, 4 months and 19 days when he celebrated that goal at the BayArena in Germany.
