Five Takeaways From Golden Eaglets Win Over Hungary In FIFA U-17 World Cup Group B Game
Published: October 26, 2019
Nigeria twice came from behind to outclass Hungary and won 4-2 in their first Group B game of the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil on Saturday evening.
Allnigeriasoccer.com's Izuchukwu Okosi presents the five talking points from the game.
1. Hungary Frustrated The Eaglets With Defensive Solidity
Their defensive nous limited the damage that the Nigerian strikers could have caused earlier in the game. The Nigerian boys resorted to shooting from range as they failed to break down the Hungarian defence.
2. Tijani Worthy Leader And Creative Spark
Before the introduction of Akinkunmi Amoo most of the attacking moves started from the captain Samson Tijani.
Tijani, a defensive midfielder by trade, shielded the defence superbly and started attacks deep from the Africans' half which made the Hungarians uneasy and undecided on which of the Nigerian front men or attacking midfielders would be the targeted one.
Everything went through Tijani and on the evidence of Saturday's performance will be much sought after by clubs in Europe.
3. Olusegun Must Release The Ball Quicker
Olakunle Olusegun is a menace with his speed but he tended to hold onto the ball a tad longer than he should have.
His link up play must improve if he is to make greater impact in the tournament. He has for a quick feet but his decision making has to improve.
4. The Defence Frustrated And Excited Nigerians
The Hungarians scored their first goal from the right side of Nigeria's defence as Gyorgy Komanomi headed home the first goal. The duo of Usman Ibrahim and Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi however scored the second and third goals respectively for Nigeria to compensate for their defensive frailties.
5. Wisdom Ubani Must Show U-17 AFCON Form
Top striker Wisdom Ubani was profligate with his shots which rarely troubled Hegyi in goal for Hungary.
Aside a 7th minute freekick which missed target by whiskers, the often reliable striker was poor with his deliveries.
His being handy to offer defensive help was impressive though.
Will still shine in the tournament as his talent was fully on display at the U-17 AFCON in Tanzania.
