'We Could Have Scored A Third Goal' - Rohr Assesses Super Eagles Win Against Benin
Published: November 14, 2019
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr faced the cameras shortly after the national team beat the Squirrels of Benin 2-1 in their opening 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Wednesday evening.
The German was delighted that the Super Eagles came from behind to beat the West African neighbors and pointed out that they could have even scored another goal.
''My first statement is that we are happy about this victory, we knew already the match would be very difficult because Benin has one of the best organization defensively and they reached the quarterfinal of the AFCON,'' Rohr told reporters at the post-match press conference, including allnigeriasoccer.com.
''You saw them playing, they eliminated Morocco, they have a very, very good team but when you play after long traveling, some players even traveled yesterday and have to play so it is not easy.
''They need some time to come into the match, unfortunately there was this first goal that came quickly and it was a shock for my team and we have to recover from this shock but with time and with our technical attitude which was very good, we were able to make them tired.

''After this penalty we had the best moments to end the half 1-1, then in the second half we played a good match like we did in our last matches already.
''That's now our style of playing football which is very interesting - a lot of movement, one touch, two touch, quick wingers, young players - and I think that in the second half we could have scored a third goal but I am happy it ended 2-1.
''When you start a goal down, and you come back to win it, it is very interesting for a team. It is always good.''
Up next, Gernot Rohr's team will do battle with Lesotho in their second Group L game of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers at the Setsoto Stadium (Maseru) on Sunday.
