Former Arsenal Talent Spotter Reveals One Reason Why Iwobi Was Offered A Contract By The Gunners
Published: December 23, 2019
Former Arsenal talent spotter Roy Massey has revealed one reason why Alex Iwobi was offered a contract after a trial spell to prove his qualities when he was aged eight.
Massey noted that the winger was skillful beyond his years, which influenced the decision of Arsenal to offer him a contract.
"Alex was seen as an eight-year-old and he was brought in for various trials," Massey said to Football.London.
"I've got to say that the one thing that took my eye with Alex, I can remember it on the astroturf, we played a little eight vs eight game, he showed great ability on the ball, even for his age.
"He did one or two skills, flicks with his leg that you didn't really see very often in young players like that - so that's the one thing that caught my eye with Alex, that he did things on the ball which possibly other youngsters at eight years of age didn't do.
"He had that instinctive skill on the ball. Just seeing that basically was a reason for us to give him a contract at Arsenal as an eight-year-old."
After relocating to England at the age of four, Iwobi was playing for local club Rippleway FC alongside his childhood pal Chuba Akpom when he was spotted by an Arsenal account and invited for trials.
