'You Couldn't Get A Word Out Of Him' - Mikel Speaks On Shevchenko's Strange Behavior At Chelsea
Published: April 18, 2020
Obi Mikel has spoken about the transfer of Ukraine legend Andriy Shevchenko to Chelsea in the summer of 2006.
One of the best strikers in European football prior to his switch to The Blues, the former AC Milan star did not reach the same heights during his time at Stamford Bridge, scoring 22 goals across two seasons.
Mikel has revealed that Andriy Shevchenko's behaviour was unusual as he refused to talk to his teammates on and off the pitch.
"Andriy was a really quiet guy, you couldn't get a word out of him. He was probably the quietest player I have ever played with," Mikel explained to The Athletic (subscription required).
"His CV was unbelievable at AC Milan. I grew up watching him, so when he joined I was like 'wow, it's Sheva!'.
"We just couldn't understand why after he arrived, he wasn't speaking - not on the pitch, not at the training ground or outside of it. It was strange."

Shevchenko was in the dugout as the Ukraine national team were held to a 2-2 draw by the Super Eagles in an international friendly in September 2019.
