Bayern Munich Striker Approached By Rohr Dreams Of Playing For Netherlands Over Nigeria
Published: April 19, 2020
Bayern Munich teenage sensation Joshua Zirkzee has given a strong hint as to where his international future lies after revealing that he dreams of playing for the senior team of his country of birth, Netherlands.
The 18-year-old has excelled for Bayern Munich's first team since his Bundesliga debut, scoring 3 goals in five appearances, and was in contention to play his maiden game for Netherlands U21 squad, having made the provisional roster for the European Championship qualifiers against Belarus and Portugal but the matches were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Nigeria Football Federation are hoping that Zirkzee could switch allegiance to the three-time African champions and Gernot Rohr has held talks with the striker about representing the Super Eagles.
With the European Championship postponed until 2021, Zirkzee's chances of playing for the Netherlands in the competition have been boosted.
In an interview with VTBL, the former Feyenoord youth-teamer said : "No, I'm not really working on that yet. I'm not a regular base player here, so I don't think I should think about it then, but I have also seen how fast things can go, so of course it is very secretly in the back of your mind.
"Oranje is a dream and as a young footballer I think it makes sense to dream about it."
Zirkzee became provisionally cap-tied to the Netherlands on
October 13, 2017 when he made his competitive debut for the U17 team in a
European Championship qualifier against Hungary.
