Okonkwo Takes Part In Arsenal's Final Training Session Pre-Fulham With GK Martinez Future In Doubt
Published: September 12, 2020
Nigeria-eligible goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is presumably in contention to be included in Arsenal's matchday squad when they take on Fulham in the opening match of the Premier League on Saturday, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Arsenal first-team manager Mikel Arteta monitored the 19-year-old at close quarters in the Gunners final training session at London Colney on Friday, September 11.
Although Okonkwo is now physically fit, he was not given match practice in either the Ipswich Town or Southampton B fixtures played by the development squad this week as he was training with the first team instead.
An understudy to both Bernd Leno and Emiliano Martinez, the Anglo-Nigerian goalkeeper has a great chance to climb up the pecking order with the future of the Argentine goalkeeper up in the air.
Martinez is being linked with a move to Premier League rivals Brighton & Hove and Aston Villa, according to the Guardian UK.
Prior to his spell on the sidelines that saw him miss the whole of the 2019-2020 season, Okonkwo was consistent in his displays, keeping three clean sheets in four matches for Arsenal's U23 in the Premier League 2.
