Published: November 18, 2020
Charlton Athletic are through to the third round of the prestigious FA Youth Cup following their hard-fought 9-8 win on penalties against Gillingham at the Bauvill Stadium on Tuesday evening, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Promising Nigerian center back Deji Erewele was on parade for the Young Addicks and put in a solid 120-minute shift including extra-time.
In a tense affair, the hosts had the advantage at the break thanks to George Baker-Moran who fired into the top left-hand corner from the edge of the box.
Seventeen minutes into the second half, parity was restored as Dylan Galvin planted a header past goalkeeper Walker.
Erewele was one of the standout performers for the Addicks during the match, was very good on the ball, dominated aerially, defended well one v one and made some key interceptions.
To cap a fine performance, the first year scholar kept his nerve to convert from 12 yards in the penalty shootout.
Charlton Athletic's reward for beating the Gills is a home match against Sheffield United in the next round of the FA Youth Cup.
